Midnight Echo is everything you’d expect the Australian Horror Writers Association official magazine to be: big, bold, and oh-so-creepy. Their next issue will feature ghost stories, which thrills me to no end. Just a few months ago, I was talking to (read: arguing with) some fellow authors about whether ghost stories were marketable any longer.
“The ghost story died with ‘The Turn of the Screw’,” said one.
“You need to read more,” I told him.
Soon, he’ll be able to find several excellent spectral tales in one volume. Help me prove my ghost-story-hating friend wrong by sending in your best tale of revenants, haints, shades, and spooks.
Payment is 3 cents/word up to $150 for short stories or $300 for a novella. They also accept non-fiction, poetry, interior and cover art, and black and white comics. Yes, comics! This issue is going to be great fun.
Please note: they request Australian English spelling. Not sure what that is? Don’t fret! There are many great resources on the web to help you Aussify your text (my puns are bone-chilling). They also have some very specific formatting guidelines; if you intend to submit then you should check out their submissions page for details. As an editor, I can attest to the fact that a properly formatted story earns you massive points, especially if your piece comes in toward the end of the reading period.
Good luck, luck, luck…
